Amazing Interface

October 20th, 2008

I am not a huge video game player but I have to admit that video games are responsible for the most interesting interface work being done over the last several years. Obviously the Wiimote has changed how we look at interface and interactivity but there are two newer games that I think will leave equally large impressions on the future of interface design.

I mentioned Will Wright’s “Spore” a few months ago on my blog and have yet to mess around with it. You can see a video of the Spore monster creator here.

The video above is for a game called “Little Big Planet” that I will definitely be checking out. From the video it looks like it allows you to intuitively build 3D & 2D environments that are governed by physics. Both Spore and Little Big planet seem to understand that it is much more fun to build your own characters, levels and games that to just play someone elses. The fun is in the making. Looks like I will have to wait to check it out though because they just announced a recall.

Little Big Planet looks interesting, but I have to question any game whose trailer plays back a recording at high-speed, just to make the game seem more interesting. (I think that 2-minute clip probably took 15 minutes to actually play.)

I’m not a typical gamer, though. (I’m awful at games, most of the time.) I was never able to get into SimCity, SimEarth, or SimAnt, and now will never be able to get into Spore either for one primary reason: time. These games are waaaaay too slow, and require a huge investment in one’s time before they start to get interesting. I’ve never been able to overcome that hurdle, and so I’ve never known the satisfaction that some gamers get from Civilization or Zelda. Give me a couple rounds of Tetris, and I’m good.

Thanks for the thoughtful response Scott. I am not really much of a gamer either. Although if I had more time I might be. I am curious, what is it about Tetris that interests you over a first person shooter or sports game? Is it the simplicity of the rules / short learning curve? Are there games other than Tetris that you like? How about board games? I was always a big fan of Scrabble.
